On Saturday 23rd April the Golf team set off for St Andrew's, the Home of Golf, to play in the ISGA (Independent Schools Golf Association) National Finals. The team, consisting of Abbie Smee, Jess Smee and myself, qualified by beating Bradford Grammar School, Sedbergh School and Worksop College in the group knockout stage of the competition. In the Area final against Worksop College, Abbie held her nerve tremendously. Knowing that the match ended tied at 1.5 points, she had to go down the 19th hole in a playoff. She won this hole with a birdie, meaning that qualification was assured.

When the team arrived on a cold Saturday afternoon we played a practice round on the Eden Course on St Andrew's Links. We checked in at the Premier Inn after our evening meal for a good nights sleep. The next day the sun shone and the wind was calm. We arrived at the Torrance Course at the Fairmont Resort with plenty of time to practice before the round. In the first day’s play Abbie and I posted the qualifying scores of +1 and +7, placing the team 9th out of the 22 teams participating. Our position in the field would have been better if the girls had not been punished by the scoring system. We checked into the Fairmont Hotel after play and enjoyed the evening, having a meal with the rest of the competitors and collecting the Area winner’s trophy with well bronzed faces!

The next day we made our way back down to the Eden course. In a place as exposed as St Andrew's, so much depends on the weather and it didn’t favour good scoring on the day. Gale force winds made even standing up straight a difficult task and snow fell at various stages. However, this didn’t stop Jess as she produced a miraculous round of +4. Abbie played well and scored +12, our other qualifying score, showing how difficult the conditions made it. After the day’s play there was a short presentation in which Jess was awarded a gold medal, and Abbie and I were awarded silver.

This marked the end of a successful trip with the school finishing 10th nationally - a fantastic result considering it was our first time at the National Finals. I would like to thank Mr Gandy for organising the trip and ensuring that everything ran smoothly. I look forward to seeing golf at Hymers College continue to grow in the future!
